What problems can tooth implantation solve?

Tooth Implantation History

In 1965 professor Ingvar Branemark was a head of research group at the University of Goteborg (Sweden) and his studies finally resulted in osteo-integration discovery (titanium prosthesis integration into tissue). Branemarks researches were aimed at jaw bone healing and regeneration after injury. The most remarkable thing about this is that osteo-integration phenomenon was discovered accidentally.

Prosthetic Dentistry

The absence of even one tooth in your mouth may cause considerable discomfort to your life. Moreover this may lead to a shift of the teeth, malocclusion, and other side conditions. To prevent these problems consult your dentist, who will tell you not only about all types of prosthetics but also of their pros and cons.

Methods of prosthetics

Today there exist many different techniques of prosthetics. But the most common groups that we include than talking of prosthetic dentistry are:

  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Dentures
  • Veneers
  • Implants

Crowns and Bridges

This is one of the most widespread methods of prosthetics. The crown restores a damaged tooth, protects a weakened or chipped tooth from further decay, when this can not be achieved with filling, corrects irregular in shape and color tooth, and becomes a pillar for the bridge.
Crowns are made of metals and their alloys (including medical stainless steel and gold), porcelain, acrylic and composite combinations of polymers (all-ceramic crowns, metal crowns, porcelain/metal crowns).

Crowns are generally used as method of full coverage restoration.

The most common are porcelain/metal crowns. These crowns are made as a strong metal frame, covered with a thin layer of porcelain paste. This type of dental crown is completely indistinguishable from the surrounding healthy teeth and even exceeds them in strength and durability.

Full porcelain crowns have very high aesthetic parameters, but they are very fragile in comparison with metal/porcelain crowns and have a rather wide range of contraindications.

Plastic crowns are not commonly used, because of its frailness and affinity to getting dark with time.
Installing of a crown is a reliable method of dental prosthetic. Properly installed crown with proper oral care can last up to 20 years.
The cost of installing metal crown starts from 6000 RUR; ceramic one 26 000 RUR.

Bridges irremovable prosthetic construction resembling the bridge, which is attached to the teeth with crowns. The objective of the bridge installed at the place of missing teeth is to stabilize the bite. It can be made of the same materials and on the same technology as crowns. A distinctive feature of the bridge is the presence of pontic in the form of artificial teeth. It is used to replace one or more of missing teeth. Installing the bridge is possible only in the presence of adjacent teeth on both sides to support the prosthesis. These abutment teeth stitch to fix crowns which are then attached to the prosthesis.

Veneers are very thin plates installed on the front of the tooth. Veneers can promptly restore the teeth, even if some of them were completely destroyed. When placing veneer dentist takes into account the patient's tooth color, so it is indistinguishable from the surrounding enamel.

There are several types of veneers, which differ in the material from which they are made:

  • ceramic veneers thin ceramic plates attached to the front of the tooth
  • Porcelain veneers - are made of medical porcelain. The best way to restore teeth that are discolored, chipped or worn
  • Composite veneers - are made of composite (filling) material. This type of veneers are made in one visit, directly in the mouth, unlike the previous two types of veneers, which are manufactured in dental laboratories. However, no composite veneers are durable and they may change color over time that will never happen with ceramic or porcelain veneers. The cost of composite veneers, of course, is lower but the quality is not as good as that of porcelain or ceramic.

The cost of installing a veneer is about of 8900 rubles.

Inlays and onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are types of dentures used for treatment of severely decayed teeth. Inlays are an alternative to crowns. If the tooth is badly damaged, dentist can set the inlay instead of a tooth crown, which essentially represents filling made in a dental laboratory with high accuracy. The tabs are made of metal alloys, porcelain, and composite materials.

The cost of installing a dental inlay is about of 4200 rubles.

Implantation is the newest technology in the field of prosthetics. During the operation a special titanium screw is set into the patients bone. Further a crown is fixed on this structure and the tooth becomes indistinguishable from surrounding teeth.

The cost of implantation is about of 15 000 rubles ($500).

Removable dentures

Removable prosthetics are widely used in cases of complete or partial loss of teeth. Modern manufacturing techniques ensure high durability, reliability, aesthetic appeal of removable dentures. And there is no need to remove denture from the mouth.

Depending on the kind of problem to be solved, the following types of dentures are used:

  • Complete removable plate dentures are used in the complete absence of teeth on one or both jaws. Their task is to make up the absence of all teeth. Cost of production - 16 500 rubles.
  • Partial dentures are used in the absence of single tooth or group of teeth in the dentition. This type of prosthesis is used in core loss and posterior dentition defects of large extent.
  • Bar prosthesis - the most reliable, expensive and comfortable design. Its main difference is that the chewing load is distributed evenly between the gingival surface of the jaw and teeth preserved, as opposed to partial dentures, where the entire burden falls on the gums.

The cost of this type of prosthesis is of 49 000 rubles.
