What problems can tooth implantation solve?

• Single tooth missing. In this case there is no need to remove the neighbor teeth nerves and turn-process these neighbor teeth for tooth crown attachment
• A few teeth missing in a row. Tooth implantation provides a possibility to place a stationary dental prosthesis instead of a removable dental prosthesis.
• All teeth missing

Tooth Implantation History

In 1965 professor Ingvar Branemark was a head of research group at the University of Goteborg (Sweden) and his studies finally resulted in osteo-integration discovery (titanium prosthesis integration into tissue). Branemark’s researches were aimed at jaw bone healing and regeneration after injury. The most remarkable thing about this is that osteo-integration phenomenon was discovered accidentally.

Implantation: Myths And Reality

Implantation is said to be terribly painful.

It's no more painful to install an implant than to treat caries. Modern anesthetics anesthetize perfectly well and if there is a patient's will and no contraindications the operation may be performed with the help of anesthetists. Even after the implant has been installed (when "freezing" stops acting) 95% of patients don't take any analgetics. In spite of the widely-spread opinion the jaw bone in which an implant is installed has no nerve receptors and therefore can't hurt. As a rule, all unpleasant sensations after the implant installation are limited to no more than minor discomfort in the sutures area.

Implants are said to be often rejected.

That's not true. Implants are made of commercially pure titanium. It is a bioinert material, the organism can't "see" it and, consequently, can't reject. More that 30-years experience of implantologists all over the world shows that 98% of implants osseointegrate, and they serve for more than 25 years.

Implants can't be installed to anybody, there are a lot of contraindications.

There are no absolute contraindications to implantation. A temporary contraindication is pregnancy. Patients with systematic ilnesses of the internal body organs (such as diabetes or hypertension) and those who having harmful habits (smoking and alcohol abuse) need to be slightly more careful with implantation. In doesn't mean at all, though, that implantation is impossible for such patients. With a proper postoperative management even in cases of severe forms of diabetes all implants integrate and function well.

Implantation takes endlessly long.

One implant's installation usually takes between 20 to 40 minutes. Then 2-3 months' period of the implant's osseoinegration follows, after which the doctor gets down to producing a crown for the implant. Although 2 or 3 months' period of the implants' osseointegration is considered to be a classical one, modern implants and some clinical situations allow to produce a crown on the very next day after the implant's installation. It all depends on the quality of the implant's fixation in the bone at the moment of installation. The tighter the implant has been installed into the bone, the sooner prosthetics appliance is possible. In cases the teeth have been missing for a long time and serious bone loss (atrophy) has occurred or in cases there are some patient's individual anatomic features delayed implants installation is probable. It is connected with the necessity to first grow the bone in place where there is a lack of it, that is to perform bone grafting. In such cases the period of the final result's achievement is naturally different.

While the implants are being osseointegrated, the patient lives either without the teeth or with ugly metal things in his or her mouth.

It is possible to solve aesthetic problems for the period of osseointegration with the help of immediate dentures (they may or may not be removable), which cover the gap and allow the person to live a full life. Such dentures may be either plastic or ceramic-metal ones.

It's a very expensive procedure.

Let's try to sort it out with the help of the figures.
Top price class implants: On the average, in Moscow the procedure of an implant installation varies from 25000 to 60000 rubles depending on the clinical situation. Add here the cost of a crown for the implant which may be from 15000 to 25000. The total will be from 40000 to 85000 rubles, which is 60000 rubles for all the work on the average. If we draw a kind of analogy with the world automobile market, such implants may be compared to a latest model Mercedes or even a Porsche.

Middle price class implants: An implant installation varies from 17000 to 25000 rubles, plus a crown which is from 14000 to 20000 rubles. The total is from 31000 to 45000, 38000 rubles for all the work on the average. And as for "Implant. ru" clinics, such an implant will cost you only 25000* rubles! And back to automobiles: such implants can easily be compared to a folk's automobile, for example Skoda or an inexpensive Volkswagen.

Native production implants: Implant installation is 15000 rubles, a crown is 14000 rubles. The total is 29000 rubles. Automobile equivalent is Zhiguli: not too comfortable, but the wheels twirl. :-)

And now let's consider the variant of a tooth's restoration with the help of a classical "bridge" (when an artificial tooth is attached to neighbouring teeth): The cost of one ceramic-metal crown for a tooth is 6000 rubles on the average. However, in order to restore one tooth it's necessary to grind and make crowns for the two neighbouring support teeth, which means it will cost 18000. Besides, as a rule, it's necessary to extract nerves out of these teeth, to install posts and fillings, and that is 6000 rubles per tooth as minimum. The total is about 30000 rubles. According to the statistical data, after 15 years of usage implants don't require replacement, but a classical "bridge" has to be remade at least once, which doubles the sum to 60000 rubles.
